Loop 11

Loop 11 (14 miles, 2,638’ of elevation climb.)Head down Montezuma Road, go left to base of Keystone Ski Area. Go up the ski area maintenance road to Ida Belle Mine (Elevation 11,607). Follow Joey’s Trail around the north side of Independence Mountain and down to Hunki Dori Cabin (Checkpoint 12.1, STOP REQUIRED). Head down Hunki Dori Road and then go around Bear Mountain across the river to Saints John Road. Continue down to Montezuma Road

I have always wanted to check out some of the Montezuma Revenge Loops. It looked like I could start this one in Keystone not to far from where I'm cutting. Half a day to load the truck half a day to ride 14 miles. No problem. Or so I thought until I could not find the turn off to the Ida Belle Mine and was almost to the top of Keystone Resort! A maintainance worker informed me that I had passed the trail and sent me in the right direction. I had passed the junction a few miles back and 1-2 thousand feet climbing. It was down some fun resort trails to the turn off. Then it was 2000 moore feet of climbing to the mine. A junction a 50/50 chance. The trail continued switching up. It had to be the right way. Another junction another 50/50 chance. This time I wasent shure. The trail looked like it just dissapeared into the distance! I continued on. Then a faint trail. A fter some pushing on the rear tire the trail became more defined. A sketchy downhill section then I got a nice panoramic view of the divide from Montezuma Bowl to Webster Pass. Found the Hunki Dori Cabin and road. It was a hard ride 3-4 stars.

Where has the summer gone?
Summer was short! 90 days or less. Didn't post much here. I hate double posts. Not enough time and too lazy to think of something new. Some links to MTBR posts:

Elephant Butte and the new bike

-Parkland Owned by Jefferson County Open Space
-Unnamed Park (Elephant Park?)
-This Denver Mountain Park is named for Elephant Butte, which resembles an elephant.
-680 acres undeveloped land near Elephant Butte
Now I’m confused. Are the trails (roads) north of 3 Sisters considered part of Elephant Butte, Elephant Park or an extension of 3 Sisters? Either way there is nothing new except for some signs! I was fortunate enough to ride here before Jeffco closed the singletrack and the road to the top for re vegetation. What a waste. I keep hoping they are going to build some new trails. Looks like the master plan calls for a loop around Elephant Butte.
It’s kind of fun but nothing special.

Silver Creek out and back
Only a couple small patches of snow. Hard to believe that I had to carry my bike through 2 feet of snow for about a mile last week! The RR grade should be ready to go when I get back from Fruita.

2009 Summer Odyssey starts now!

Today was the last day of work for a while. YEA! It was an average winter not too much snow. I was able to ride most of it. Got about 800 miles in already a little ahead of schedule. Time to plan my Grand Valley trip. Don't think I'll do a schedule just a list of rides I want to do. I hate schedules and can never seem to follow them! I'm really going to keep track of all my rides this year! Right. I'm a rider not a writer.
